Why should I pay more for a sustainable clothing item?
We’re more prone to throw out a cheap clothing item than a more expensive, quality and timeless piece. Most big box stores and popular brands use overseas manufacturers who are often not paid a living wage, who waste water and pollute the environment. The items are mass produced with low quality standards. We thoughtfully source eco-friendly brands that consciously produce their products, ensure the craftspeople are treated with dignity and respect, and the clothing items are made thoughtfully and well.
Organic cotton vs regular ol’ cotton?
Regular cotton is produced with harmful pesticides that pollute the environment. Regular cotton uses 11 times more water. Organic cotton fibers are longer and stronger, hypoallergenic, plus many organic cotton farmers are fair trade certified.
What is “Fast Fashion”?
Fast fashion is a term used to describe a highly profitable and exploitative business model based on replicating catwalk trends and high-fashion designs, mass-producing them at low cost. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions each year, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. That's more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.
What are the problems with fast fashion?
Textile waste from consumers, low quality, high C02 emissions, harmful and unsafe working conditions, water pollution and water waste.
What can I do to shop more sustainable?
Buy 2nd hand, shop with sustainable and eco friendly brands, quality over quantity, think about timelessness over trendiness, repairing, caring and donating gently used items instead of throwing them away.
