Every June, communities across the country come together to celebrate Pride Month. While Pride is often associated with colorful parades, festivals, and celebrations, its roots run much deeper. Pride began as a movement for visibility, equality, and the fundamental right for LGBTQIA+ people to live openly and authentically.
The modern Pride movement traces its origins to the Stonewall Uprising of 1969 in New York City, when members of the LGBTQIA+ community stood up against discrimination and police harassment. What began as a protest grew into a global movement that continues today, reminding us that progress is worth celebrating while also recognizing the work that remains.
Here in Colorado, Pride has become an important part of our communities. From Denver PrideFest, one of the largest Pride celebrations in the Rocky Mountain region, to Pikes Peak Pride Festival & Parade in Colorado Springs, thousands of people gather each year to celebrate love, identity, self-expression, and belonging. Denver Pride has been bringing together the LGBTQIA+ community, allies, families, and local businesses for more than five decades, while Pikes Peak Pride continues to create space for celebration, education, and connection throughout Southern Colorado.
This year's Denver Pride celebration includes a month-long series of events culminating in the Pride Parade and PrideFest on June 28, while Colorado Springs' Pikes Peak Pride Festival and Parade will take place June 13-14.
