Douglas fir, although not a true fir, is the premier conifer of California & the pacific northwest.  It hails amongst the old growth forests & is one of the largest trees growing there.  It is perfectly at home with the coastal redwoods, where these giants grow in prehistoric forests of moisture-rich soil.  In spring, the new, bright green tips explode with a citrus conifer scent unlike any other.
